From 23 July to 3 August 2014, all the eyes will be set on Glasgow, as it will be hosting the XX Commonwealth Games. A modern city of culture and sport, forward-thinking and creative, Glasgow is one of the UK’s largest cities and has a lively heart and warm people.
An amazing Opening Ceremony at the Parkhead Stadium, will start 11 days of competition in 17 sports in the XX Commonwealth Games. Hampden will be adapted to host the athletics programme for the Games. In the east end of the city, track cycling will take place in the new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. The 250 m track, designed by one of the foremost track designers Ralph Shuermann, will play host to one of Scotland’s most high-octane sports. Named for Sir Chris Hoy, Team GB’s most successful Olympic gold-medallist and Scottish Commonwealth Games champion, the track itself sure to cement his legacy; both during the Games and as the future home of Scottish cycling. The custom built Emirates Arena is one of the largest facilities of its kind in Europe and will provide a dramatic setting for the Badminton competition.
This will be the third time Scotland has hosted the Commonwealth Games, and there is always enormous public interest and support for the Games. Edinburgh played host to the Games in both 1970 and 1986 in which Scotland won gold medals in the men’s and women’s 10,000 m respectively. Now it’s the turn of Glasgow to welcome athletes from around the world as they compete for medal glory across 17 sports.
But the XX Commonwealth Games won’t just be about sport. The year-long Culture 2014, which started in July, promises to be Scotland’s biggest ever cultural celebration. Coinciding with the official opening of the Games and running for its duration, Festival 2014 celebrates the vibrant metropolis of Glasgow and its cultural hotbed of music, theatre and the arts.
